The August 2018 issue of LPM Online is all about organized retail crime. How much of a problem is it, really? Last week’s LPM Insider survey wanted to know what you observe in your store or organization. How much of the theft in your store is the result of ORC? Here’s the breakdown of responses.
In your estimation, what percentage of the external theft in your store or company is the result of organized retail crime (ORC)?
- 40% said 25-50% of their store’s external theft could be attributed to ORC
- 40% said 0-25% of their store’s external theft could be attributed to ORC
- 20% said 50-75% of their store’s external theft could be attributed to ORC

Part two of the question asked what respondents considered as the basis of their estimation. Comments (which have been slightly edited for clarity) included:
Group activity has become more prevalent, and they target the same items time and time again. They run in waves where there will be little to no activity in the store, and then it’s day after day, same people same MO.
Arrests.
Number of cases.
The number of groups that we catch trying to shoplift. They always have a couple to distract you while another attempts to remove items from the store.
